I wonder how many times this will occur again - saying that THIS hw will be neccessary to run full unsupervised FSD and then next generation comes and they be like "it is likely too weak, you need the new hw". Happened twice only in my ownership of my tesla, and mine is from 2021, and as i have read it has been promised since 2015 XD When they still promised HW3 would be able to solve unsupervised FSD. Now its already AI5 that should be the promised one, maybe AI4 for unsupervised but not safe enough (99 or 99.9%?). Guess we will need to wait till it can be proven that a specific hardware really is capable enough :D

It also brings the question if they ever bother with bringing FSD 12.6 to Europe once the regulatory approval is there or if they only will bring AI4 (or if it takes much longer for approval AI5) FSD Versions to Europe. Lets see if they are able to do it this year

What I theorize is that unsupervised FSD will never happen. There will always be a HW or regulatory constraint preventing it from reaching 100%. If they do happen to achieve 100%, what external event will cause it to drop back to less than? Some new law, a fringe scenario, or changes to highway/road signage, I'm not sure.

I have a 2022 M3 that I picked up in November 2021, so it is HW3. In many cases, I have to intervene only slightly. Maybe that will be as good as it ever gets.

I suspect this is going to be like smartphones, or other electronic devices. Which truly does not make sense to me when it comes to a vehicle, whether EV or otherwise. I do not understand why Tesla doesn't just over build the computational power right from the get-go. Why only build the hardware to the most basic needs or bare minimum? Why not instead make the processing power as much as it can reasonably be, without also considerably raising the price of the vehicles? Or even at a bare minimum, make the design of the processing components such that they can be continually upgraded (with a purchase) by the consumer? It is beyond me, that I just purchased my Model 3 in 2024, and I am already feeling like my car is outdated in terms of FSD and its future capabilities. Tesla will never lose its image of being a disposable car company if it doesn't get this aspect about its cars right.

Computational Power is Energy Hungry i think that is why they first thought less capable hardware is sufficient. There are two worlds clashing together here, a short lived smartphone world and a relatively long lived car world. But im with you, it should at least be more easy to upgrade the hardware fsd computer (except for cameras as they are built into the car frame more complicated i guess).

Anyway, i will keep my car regardless as im happy with it overall. FSD and features are second for me but always interesting to see what happens :)
